HERbeat: Taiko Women ALL-STARS

TaikoArts Midwest is bringing the best Japanese & North American female taiko artists together, in the middle of a Minnesota winter, to collaborate and create a mind-blowing performance on Leap Day, February 29, 2020 at the Ordway in St. Paul, MN. These historic events will also be featured in a new documentary film. The voices and stories of women are MISSING or merely footnoted in much of the taiko history, narratives, and media to date. In reality, 2/3 of taiko players in the United States are women. Featuring Chieko Kojima, Kaoly Asano, Tiffany Tamaribuchi, Megan Chao Smith, and Jennifer Weir, the HERbeat film will be embedded in each artist's personal life, home, work, and taiko. It will explore themes of cultural and racial identity and the challenges faced by professional female artists. Directed by award-winning Dawn Mikkelson, it will feature an all female crew.
